Step-by-step instructions for use

The mechanical procedure is identical to that of transparent film. The particularities of the black film are marked at each step. If you are familiar with applying transparent film, you can skim and attend only to the points where opacity changes something.

Inspecting the roll and the pigment

Before each roll change, check the visual consistency of the color: the black must be uniform, with no semi-transparent areas or “mottling” where the pigment was poorly distributed at the factory. This is a quick batch quality check: a film that shows lighter areas when you unroll 1-2 meters under strong light does not protect as advertised, and it is best to report the defect before processing it. The rest of the inspection (edge uniformity, absence of tears in the first meters) is identical to the transparent film.

Initial anchoring at a low corner

The technique is the same as with transparent film: the initial 30-40 cm tied or folded back on themselves at a lower corner, letting the cling on the inner face fix the first layer. One particularity of the black film: the cling is slightly less visible due to the opacity of the color, so do not rely on visual verification and adjust the pressure by feel.

Ascending spiral under tension

50% overlap, 20 cm advance per turn, constant tension. The opacity can make it difficult to see whether the film is being stretched correctly: a new roll should stretch between 150% and 250% without noticeable effort. If you are unsure about the correct tension, a good practice is to mark a zone of the pallet beforehand with tape and verify at the end that this tape remains clearly compressed under the film.

If your operation needs to combine opacity with legible labels (shipments to destinations where the documentation goes on the pallet), apply 2-3 turns of transparent film over the labels as a viewing layer and then wrap the entire pallet with the black film. The cling adheres the two films without any problem and you get the best of both: general confidentiality plus targeted visibility where needed. The technique also works in reverse (black underneath, transparent on top) if the priority is to protect against UV.

Top coverage and descent

Double turn at the top to fix it, then descending spiral with 50% overlap. On export shipments with palletizing for long transit, it is advisable to reinforce the two bottom turns with three or four extra turns: the base is where friction with forks and ramps is most concentrated during handling.

Closing and cutting

Identical to the transparent film: two final turns at the base, pressure on the previous layer to activate the cling, transverse cut. Verify that no loose tails remain: on black film the end is not as easily noticed, and a poorly sealed end can go unnoticed during the warehouse exit inspection.

⚠️ Common mistake to avoid:

Do not confuse opacity with imperviousness. Black stretch film blocks light but remains permeable to ambient humidity: in tropical climates with nighttime condensation, the pallet can gain surface moisture between the film cover and the boxes. If your shipment requires a water barrier, add an intermediate layer of polyethylene before the black film or switch to a product with a laminated barrier. Black film is light protection plus visual security, not waterproof.

A roll stored in an exposed yard loses its layer-to-layer adhesion capacity over time, which translates into pallets that show bubbles and loose areas after application. Store the rolls vertically, in a cool indoor space, away from direct sunlight.

Partially used rolls between shifts should be returned to a vertical position with the cut end fixed against the roll. The active cling is verified by pressing two fingers onto the film: if the fingers separate cleanly with no trace of adhesion, the roll has lost its properties and it is best to remove it from the shift flow. Loss of cling is the first sign of product aging in the warehouse.

When does the extra cost of black justify itself versus transparent?

Black is justified in three specific scenarios: confidentiality (shipments where you do not want third parties to see what you are transporting), light protection (light-sensitive products that are stored or transported in the sun), and batch identification (when the visual difference from transparent pallets saves inventory time in high-volume warehouses). If your operation does not fall into any of the three, transparent gives the same mechanical seal at a lower cost.

Does the film's UV protection really work for storing pallets outdoors?

UV blocking significantly reduces the radiation that reaches the pallet contents, which is relevant for products that degrade with direct light (some chemicals, dry foods in partially translucent packaging, electronics with plastic components). It does not replace a dedicated cover for prolonged outdoor storage: the film is a secondary layer, not a tarp. For pallets in a yard outdoors for days, the correct combination is black film as the seal plus a tarp or cover over the whole.

Is it compatible with pallets that need quick visual inspection?

Not directly. Once the black film is applied, the contents are completely hidden until it is cut. For warehouses that need frequent visual verification (rotating products, batch quality control), it is advisable to use transparent film on at least one face of the pallet: the “window” keeps the documentation legible while the rest of the palletizing benefits from the opacity of the black. The mixed-layer technique is easily applied: 2 transparent turns on the critical face, black on the rest.
