This guide covers the use of the plastic cable tie: choosing the right size, choosing the color based on location, passing the strap around the bundle, tensioning firmly without strangling, and cutting the excess flush with the head. Follow these steps to group and secure cable harnesses, hoses, or any item that needs a quick, secure, and clean hold.
Plastic cable ties (also called “zip ties” or “plastic straps”) are polyamide (nylon) bands with an integrated one-way locking head. Once tightened, they cannot be loosened (single use). We offer four sizes, and each is available in white (indoor, aesthetics, visibility) and black (outdoor, UV-resistant).

Using a plastic cable tie seems trivial, but there are important nuances to make the hold last. The key points: choose the right size, tension firmly without overdoing it, and finish the cut.
The length must wrap around the bundle and leave at least 5 cm (2 in) of excess to enter the head and tension. The width determines the strength: the wider it is, the more load it supports. For bundles of 1-2 cm use 3×100; for 3-4 cm use 4×200; for thick tubes or harnesses use 8×300; to fasten nets to posts or large cable bundles, use 10×500.
Black ties contain carbon black that protects them from UV: use them outdoors. On a Dominican job site in full sun, a white outdoor tie crystallizes and breaks in 6-12 months; the black one lasts 5-10 years. Reserve white ties for indoor use, temporary installation, or when you need to clearly see the tie against a dark background.
Wrap the strap around the bundle to be fastened. Insert the free end into the head opening on the correct side: the strap has teeth on only one face. If you feel a lot of resistance when passing it through, it is the wrong way around. Push with your thumb until it passes the first notch and you hear the click.
Pull the free end by hand until the tie grips the bundle without deforming it. On electrical cables, do not crush the insulation; on hoses, do not pinch them closed and block the fluid flow. If you need a lot of force, use a calibrated tensioning gun that tensions and cuts at a controlled tension.
With scissors or cutting pliers, trim the remaining tail as flush as possible with the head. A long tail snags on everything that passes nearby and, if it is flat, the edges are sharp for personnel. Always trim it and, if your installation is accessible to the public, file the cut with a file or use ties with a rounded head.
On geomembrane, geotextile, and net jobs, the 8×300 black tie is the favorite tool for fastening the material to posts, beams, and rebar during installation. The 10×500 black handles temporary or permanent anchoring where the bundle width is large. Always keep a box on the job site: it saves time compared to wire or rope and is applied with a single hand.
Do not use white ties outdoors thinking that “a couple of months won't hurt.” Nylon without UV protection crystallizes quickly under the Caribbean sun: after 4-6 months it becomes brittle and breaks at a touch. A seemingly good temporary installation can collapse with the first strong wind. If it is outdoors, always go with black.
Cable ties are a quick, disposable option. For heavy permanent fastening, consider metal alternatives or buckled strapping.
The metal strapping buckle and the polyester (PET) strapping are the pairing for when the load exceeds what is reasonable for nylon: closing heavy palletized loads, immobilizing coils, temporary structures under tension. The transparent polypropylene adhesive tape handles spot fastening that does not require tension: marking, temporary sealing of packages, label reinforcement.
Installed ties require no maintenance, but the batch in storage does:
Nominal tensile strength per unit: 3×100 mm holds about 80 N (8 kg / 18 lb), 4×200 mm about 220 N (22 kg / 49 lb), 8×300 mm about 540 N (55 kg / 121 lb), 10×500 mm up to 800 N (82 kg / 180 lb). For critical applications (temporary structures, dynamic loads, vibrations) use several in parallel or switch to a strapping system with a metal buckle.
Some models allow unlocking with a small screwdriver inserted through the head, lifting the locking tooth. It works with care, but the tooth gets damaged and the tie no longer guarantees tension the next time. For an installation where you need to adjust several times, use reusable ties (ties with a release lever) or buckled strapping.
The nylon of the ties works between -40 °C and +85 °C (-40 °F and +185 °F) without losing properties. Above 90 °C they begin to soften and lose tension; above 120 °C they deform. On a Dominican job site in full sun the surface temperature can rise to 70-75 °C, still within range. In areas close to steam pipes or boilers, use metal or fluoropolymer ties specifically for high temperature.
