Controlling crawling pests in crops without resorting to pyrethroids or neonicotinoids that leave residues on the harvest and against which insects develop resistance, while improving soil structure with a mineral that provides bioavailable silicon, requires natural diatomaceous earth of controlled purity with fine and consistent granulometry. This diatomite—also called diatomaceous earth, kieselguhr, or DE—is marketed by Gardese in its natural, uncalcined presentation, micronized in 20 kg bags, designed for organic farming, professional gardening, pest control in stables and for pets, and as an industrial absorbent.

Key Benefits

  • Physical insecticidal action without generating resistance: the microscopic edges of fossilized silica puncture the waxy cuticle of insects on contact and dehydrate them within hours, without active compounds against which the pest can mutate.
  • Contribution of bioavailable silicon to the crop: slowly released silicon strengthens plant cell walls, increases tolerance to water stress, and reduces attacks by sucking pests such as thrips and aphids.
  • Exceptional absorbent capacity: retains multiple times its weight in water and liquids, a useful condition for regulating water in substrates, controlling humidity in stables, and as an agent for oil or chemical spills in the workshop.
  • Inert mineral with no expiration date: being fossilized algae from millions of years ago, it does not decompose or lose properties with prolonged storage as long as it is kept dry, a direct advantage over organic products.
  • Compatible with certified organic production: natural diatomite is accepted by most organic farming standards, a critical condition for certified organic producers who need pest control without losing their certification.

Typical Applications and Uses

  • Control of ants, cockroaches, fleas, bed bugs, and crawling pests in horticultural crops and urban gardens.
  • Silicon supply and substrate structure improvement in professional gardening, nurseries, and organic production.
  • Humidity and odor control in stables, corrals, bird cages, and pet areas.
  • Industrial absorbent for oil spills, non-aggressive chemical liquids, and dry cleaning in mechanical workshops.

Quality and Durability

An inexpensive diatomite fails in two areas: the origin is of low purity with high clay and carbonate content (which reduces the abrasive effect against insects), and the granulometry is irregular (which leads to uneven application and unprotected areas). Gardese works with micronized natural diatomite of controlled purity, which separates a diatomaceous earth for serious agricultural operations from a generic bag that is ineffective against pests.

Also known as: Technical: amorphous diatomite, kieselguhr, natural diatomaceous earth, biogenic silica, diatomite, diatomaceous powder. In Dominican Republic and the Caribbean: tierra de diatomeas, diatomita, tierra blanca, polvo blanco contra hormigas. In other countries: diatomaceous earth (USA), DE (USA), tierra de diatomeas (LATAM), kieselgur (ES, DE), terre fossile (FR), diatomite (LATAM).

Yes, when used correctly. Agricultural-grade diatomite (uncalcined, low crystalline silica content) does not burn roots or leaves, and it provides silicon — a micronutrient that strengthens cell walls and increases resistance to water stress. For pets, avoid direct inhalation of the dust during application; once applied to bedding or surroundings and left to settle, the dust stops being a problem. For animal feed use, only the food-grade version (not the agricultural one).

The mechanism is physical, not chemical. The microscopic particles of fossilized silica have sharp edges that pierce the insect's waxy cuticle on contact, absorbing the oils that waterproof it and causing lethal dehydration within hours. There is no active molecule against which the insect could mutate genetically, which is why no resistance develops, unlike with pyrethroids or neonicotinoids. It is effective against ants, cockroaches, fleas, bedbugs and most crawling insects.

When it gets wet, diatomite temporarily loses its dehydrating effect because the particles absorb water and stop drawing the oils from the insect. Once dry, the original mechanical property is restored. For outdoor use, reapply after heavy rain or in zones with daily watering. As a soil amendment and silicon source, the effect persists regardless of humidity, since that benefit does not depend on abrasiveness but on mineral exchange with the plant.

It does not expire. Diatomite is algae fossilized millions of years ago — a stable inert mineral whose abrasive porous structure does not change with prolonged storage as long as it stays dry. Keeping the bag closed and protected from humidity is all that's needed; persistent ambient humidity can clump the powder and reduce ease of application, but drying restores all properties. Absorbent, abrasive and silicon-supply capacities are kept indefinitely.

Fine dust can cause mechanical irritation of airways and the eye mucosa if inhaled or in direct contact during application. Wear a self-filtering mask (FFP1 or equivalent) and goggles for dry application, especially when sprinkling over wide areas or in air currents. Avoid applying on very windy days. An important technical detail: natural agricultural diatomite has low risk; calcined diatomite (industrial filtration use) contains crystalline silica and demands stricter protection.
