Installing and filling geocell panels on slopes and embankments requires holding the cellular mesh to the ground while it is spread and filled with aggregate, without the panel shifting or closing before the fill is confined. This fiberglass rod —also called a fiberglass stake or geocell anchor pin— is manufactured by MOLTEXO from professional-grade fiberglass, in a 12 mm (0.47 in) diameter and 50 cm (20 in) length format (pack of 50 units), and is the standard solution for temporarily securing geocells in combination with the anchor cap.

Key benefits

  • Designed to secure geocells: a straight Ø12 mm bar designed specifically for this purpose, with the right strength to hold the cell during spreading and filling without oversizing the anchor.
  • Does not rust or corrode: unlike a steel rod, fiberglass does not rust from soil moisture or stain the ground, keeping the anchor point clean throughout the installation.
  • Lightweight and efficient to transport: the low weight of fiberglass, far below that of steel, makes transport and on-site handling cheaper and faster, and allows hundreds of anchor points to be placed without tiring the operator.
  • Complete system with the anchor cap: designed to be used with the MOLTEXO anchor cap, which is inserted into the end and presses the geocell against the ground, forming the standard temporary fastening system.
  • Non-conductive material: fiberglass does not conduct electricity, a safety advantage over metal rods on jobs with nearby electrical installations.

Typical applications and uses

  • Temporary securing of geocells on slopes and embankments during spreading.
  • Fastening geocell panels while they are filled with aggregate in soil stabilization.
  • Geocell installation in gravel parking areas, access roads and erosion control works.
  • Provisional anchoring of geocell in green walls and technical landscaping projects.

Quality and durability

Metal rods are sometimes used to anchor geosynthetics, but the fiberglass rod is designed specifically for the temporary fastening of geocells: it provides the right strength for that purpose without the weight or corrosion of steel. Being much lighter, it is more efficient to transport and handle when placing hundreds of anchor points, and because it does not rust, it neither stains the ground nor weakens with soil moisture. MOLTEXO works with professional-grade fiberglass, which together with the anchor cap forms a clean, fast temporary fastening system for geocell work.

Also known as: Technical: fiberglass stake, geocell anchor pin, fiberglass stake, fiberglass rod, fiberglass anchor rod. In the DR and the Caribbean: fiberglass rod, geocell stake, geocell pin. In other countries: fiberglass stake (USA), fiberglass rod (USA), geocell anchor stake (USA), varilla de fibra de vidrio (LATAM), piquet en fibre de verre (FR).
Which geosynthetics is this rod meant for, and how does it combine with the cap?

Compatible with most geosynthetics that need ground anchoring: confinement geocells, biaxial geogrids, synthetic erosion mats, coir blankets, anti-erosion mats and erosion-control mesh on slopes. Full anchoring system: the rod is driven vertically through the geosynthetic openings to the depth needed for soil firmness (50 cm standard for soft soils, shorter for compact ones), and the MOLTEXO anchor cap is inserted on the upper end of the rod, creating a retention head that presses the geosynthetic against the ground. The rod + cap combination is the standard professional solution.

Does it work in any kind of Caribbean soil?

In most typical Caribbean soils. The steel rod is rigid enough to penetrate clays, topsoil, compact sandy soils, calcareous soils typical of the Dominican Republic and soils with moderate-sized gravel. In terrain with very hard rock, rocky outcrops near the surface or extremely compacted soil, an auxiliary tool may be needed for pre-drilling: electric rotary hammer, masonry drill or manual pre-perforation with a punch. Anchor density per square meter depends on slope and soil firmness: steep slopes with soft soil require higher density to prevent the geosynthetic being washed away by runoff during the rainy season.

What tools are needed for proper installation?

Basic tools for most installations. For soft and medium soils: a 1-2 kg construction mallet or hammer, enough to drive the rod vertically with light blows without bending the steel or tearing the geosynthetic. For compact soils: a heavier sledge (3-5 kg) that provides inertia for efficient penetration. For extremely hard, rocky soils or stone near the surface: an electric rotary hammer with a masonry bit for pre-drilling, avoiding rod deformation and reducing operator effort. Recommended PPE during driving: work gloves, closed safety goggles (to prevent metal chips from flying), safety boots.

Does the rod come treated against rust?

It is standard construction steel without anti-corrosion coating. The surface oxidation that appears after installation, with soil moisture, is normal and technically convenient: the rust layer increases the friction of the steel against the surrounding soil, improving long-term anchor hold. For permanent applications, surface oxidation does not compromise structural integrity within the typical project timeframe (years to decades) or anchoring force. For critical applications with extreme declared service life or chemically aggressive soils (contaminated industrial zones, soils with strong acids), galvanized rod by specific design may be appropriate — not included in this standard product.
