Creating a watertight seal between a concrete structure and an HDPE geomembrane in auditable hydraulic works such as oxidation ponds, sanitary landfills, industrial tanks, and treatment plants, where direct welding to concrete is impossible and mechanical systems with bolts can fail due to sealing leaks, requires an anchor profile embedded in virgin HDPE with an exposed face for extrusion welding. This Poly Lock—also known as E-profile, HDPE anchor profile for concrete, or E-lock—is manufactured by MOLTEXO in virgin HDPE, dimensions 100×40 mm × 3 m long, in packs of 10 units, designed for lining tanks, ponds, canals, landfills, and hydraulic works with auditable sealing criteria.

Key Benefits

  • Mechanical anchoring to fresh concrete: the rear anchor "fingers" of the profile are embedded in the concrete mass during curing, creating immovable mechanical retention that withstands hydrostatic pressure and thrusts throughout the useful life of the structure.
  • Virgin HDPE for monolithic welding: the Poly Lock material is identical to that of common HDPE geomembranes, a critical condition for extrusion welding to create a complete molecular bond where the profile and geomembrane become a single watertight piece.
  • Chemical resistance in hydraulic works: HDPE withstands contact with wastewater, landfill leachates, aggressive chemicals typical of treatment plants, mild alkalis and acids, conditions for decades of useful life in continuous hydraulic operation.
  • Smooth exposed face ready for welding: after demolding, the exposed face of the Poly Lock is perfectly accessible for extrusion welding with an HDPE filler rod, a condition for professional operation without additional surface preparation.
  • UV resistance during pre-lining exposure: virgin HDPE withstands exposure to the Caribbean sun during the period between demolding and geomembrane welding without degradation or loss of welding properties.

Typical Applications and Uses

  • Lining of tanks, irrigation canals, water reservoirs, and industrial reservoirs with HDPE geomembrane.
  • Sealing of bottoms and slopes in oxidation ponds, sanitary landfills, and water treatment plants.
  • Joints between concrete and geomembrane in dikes, dams, tunnels, and hydraulic works with contractual auditing.
  • Protection of concrete structures exposed to corrosive agents in industrial plants and chemical works.

Quality and Durability

An inexpensive Poly Lock fails in two ways: the HDPE is not virgin but low-quality recycled (which produces weak welds with a risk of leakage under auditable hydrostatic pressure) and the rear anchors are short or ineffective (which causes the profile to loosen from the concrete under backfill thrust or water pressure, compromising watertightness). MOLTEXO works with virgin HDPE and a calibrated anchor design, which distinguishes an E-profile for auditable hydraulic works from a generic consumable that fails in the first watertightness tests.

Also known as: Technical: Poly Lock, E-profile, HDPE anchor profile, embedded HDPE batten, geomembrane embed strip. In DR and Caribbean: Poly Lock, perfil E, regleta para geomembrana, perfil de anclaje. In other countries: Poly Lock (USA), HDPE batten strip (USA), embed strip (USA), perfil de anclaje HDPE (LATAM), profilé d'ancrage (FR), regleta de fijación (LATAM, ES).

During the formwork stage, before pouring the concrete. The sequence: (1) prepare the formwork in the area where the geomembrane will be fixed, (2) position the Poly Lock on the inner face of the formwork with the smooth side facing in and the rear anchors pointing into the concrete space, (3) hold it temporarily with staples, wire or tape so it does not shift during the pour, (4) pour and consolidate the concrete around the profile's rear anchors, (5) after curing and stripping the form, the Poly Lock's smooth face is exposed and ready for the geomembrane to be welded onto it. Without this sequence the profile is not embedded and loses its structural function.

Extrusion welding with HDPE filler rod. The technique: after the concrete cures and the form is stripped, the HDPE geomembrane is positioned against the exposed face of the Poly Lock, and welding is applied with a manual extruder or a hot-air gun with a shoe that simultaneously melts the geomembrane, the Poly Lock profile and the HDPE filler rod, creating a monolithic bond. This complete molecular fusion guarantees one hundred percent leak-tightness at the seal, a critical condition for auditable hydraulic works such as sanitary landfills, oxidation lagoons and treatment plants where leakage is unacceptable. The weld must be carried out by a trained operator, with subsequent leak-tightness verification by air pressure.

Not directly. The Poly Lock is manufactured in virgin HDPE and is designed to be welded by heat fusion to geomembranes of the same material (HDPE) or close compatibles (LLDPE under a specific weld design). PVC geomembranes have different polymer chemistry (PVC vs polyolefin) and do not weld to HDPE; trying to weld PVC over Poly Lock produces a weak bond that fails under hydrostatic pressure. To fix a PVC geomembrane to a concrete structure, the standard solution is a mechanical fixing profile: metal plate with expansion bolts, or stainless plate with a sealing tape system — a configuration different from the Poly Lock, which is HDPE-specific.

The standard E-shaped profile is designed to be embedded in fresh concrete during the pour, so the rear anchors end up locked inside the concrete mass for maximum mechanical retention. For after-the-fact fixing on already-cured concrete (typical in maintenance or extensions of existing works), the Poly Lock's performance is not optimal and alternatives should be considered: mechanical profiles with expansion bolts and sealing gaskets; routing a continuous groove in the concrete with specialized resin to seat the Poly Lock with high-strength epoxy; or specific hybrid fixing systems.
