Installing and filling geocell panels on slopes and embankments requires holding the cellular mesh to the ground while it is spread and filled with aggregate, without the panel shifting or closing before the fill is confined. This fiberglass rod —also called a fiberglass stake or geocell anchor pin— is manufactured by MOLTEXO from professional-grade fiberglass, in a 12 mm (0.47 in) diameter and 50 cm (20 in) length format (pack of 50 units), and is the standard solution for temporarily securing geocells in combination with the anchor cap.

What is this rod for and how does it combine with the anchor cap?

It is the solution for temporarily fixing geocells to the ground while they are spread and filled. The fiberglass rod is driven vertically through the geocell openings to the depth the soil's firmness requires (50 cm is the standard measure for soft soils, less in compact soils) and the MOLTEXO anchor cap is inserted on the upper end, creating a retention head that presses the cell against the ground. The fiberglass rod plus cap combination is the standard system to hold the geocell until the aggregate fill takes over the structural work.

Does it work in any kind of Caribbean soil?

In most typical Caribbean soils. The fiberglass rod has the stiffness to be driven into clays, black earth, compact sandy soils and the calcareous soils common in the Dominican Republic. In ground with very hard stone, rock near the surface or extremely compacted soil, pre-drill with a punch or a construction drill so the end does not splinter when driving. The number of anchors per square meter depends on the slope and the firmness of the soil: steep slopes with soft soil demand more points to keep the geocell in place during spreading and filling.

What tools are needed for proper installation?

Basic tools. For soft and medium soils a mallet or light hammer is enough to drive the rod with gentle blows, without forcing the end or tearing the geocell; fiberglass splinters if struck violently, so drive with short, controlled blows. For compact soils, pre-drilling with a punch or drill helps. As PPE, work gloves are recommended (fiberglass can leave splinters), plus safety glasses and boots. The anchor cap is fitted by hand or with a light tap once the rod is driven.

Does the fiberglass rod rust, and can it be reused?

It does not rust: fiberglass is immune to corrosion, so it neither stains nor weakens with soil moisture, unlike a steel rod. Since its role is the temporary fixing of the geocell during spreading and filling, in many cases it can be carefully recovered once the fill confines the cell and reused on the next section, as long as the end has not splintered. If the project calls for leaving it in permanently, fiberglass endures buried without corroding.
