Water containment and civil works projects in the Dominican Republic require insulation that can withstand years of Caribbean sun without becoming brittle. This HDPE geomembrane —also called a liner or impermeable sheet— is manufactured by Moltexo with professional-grade virgin resins, in a range of gauges from 400 to 8000, and designed for serious, long-lasting work: never as a temporary solution.

Key Benefits

  • Total impermeability: Dense molecular structure that blocks the passage of water and contaminating fluids, ensuring watertightness in ponds, canals, and foundations.
  • Verified UV resistance: Carbon black content of 2.0 to 3.0% (ASTM D1603) to withstand years under direct Caribbean sun without degradation.
  • Mechanical durability: Excellent tensile, tear, and puncture performance according to ASTM D6693 Type IV, D1004, and D4833, adapting to slight ground movements.
  • Careful Moltexo manufacturing: Professional-grade virgin polymer, controlled production processes, and verified ASTM tests for each gauge.
  • Inert material: Suitable for aquaculture, fish farming, and potable water storage, without toxic migration.

Typical Applications and Uses

  • Lining of artificial lakes, agricultural reservoirs, fish ponds, and water storage tanks.
  • Waterproofing of cisterns, irrigation canals, and drainage trenches on farms and agro-industrial projects.
  • Secondary containment in industrial fuel or chemical tanks.
  • Landfill sealing and vapor barrier in foundations and concrete slabs.

Quality and Durability

Each variant has internationally referenced ASTM tests: 800% elongation at break (ASTM D6693 Type IV), ESCR stress cracking resistance of 300 h (ASTM D5397), and 50% OIT retention after 1600 h of UV aging (ASTM D3895 / D5885). This is the technical level that separates a long-life liner from a generic black plastic for temporary use. Moltexo also controls the minimum individual thickness with a -10% tolerance on each roll, a requirement that simply does not apply to low-cost materials.

Also known as: Technical: HDPE geomembrane, impermeable sheet, HDPE liner, smooth geomembrane, containment membrane, high-density polyethylene, geomembrane for aquaculture, HDPE vapor barrier. In DR and Caribbean: black plastic for ponds, black plastic for covering, plastic for lakes, pond tarp, slab plastic, thick liner-type plastic, black polyethylene plastic for construction. In other countries: HDPE geomembrane (MX, CO, AR), pond liner (USA), HDPE liner, impermeable membrane, smooth geomembrane (LATAM).
Is it suitable for drinking water and fish farming?

Yes. This liner is made from professional-grade virgin polymer, with no toxic additives or contaminants that migrate into the water, making it suitable for drinking-water reservoirs, fish farming ponds, and aquaculture projects. The chemical stability of virgin HDPE prevents the release of plasticizers or solvents, something that does occur with economical PVC sheets or common black plastics manufactured from recycled material.

What sets it apart from a common construction-grade black plastic?

The real difference lies in the raw material and the additives. A common black plastic uses recycled resins and lacks specialized UV antioxidants; under the Caribbean sun it loses flexibility within a few months and cracks. This geomembrane uses virgin polymer with 2.0-3.0% carbon black verified by ASTM D1603 and OIT additives with 50% retention after 1600 hours of UV aging. It is not the same product nor does it last the same.

Does it withstand contact with fuels, agricultural acids, and fertilizers?

HDPE has broad chemical resistance and handles diluted fuels, lubricants, common liquid fertilizers, saline solutions, and water with organic matter from agricultural or fish-farming operations well. For highly concentrated acids, pure aromatic hydrocarbons, or chlorinated solvents, it is best to validate compatibility on a case-by-case basis before installation, especially in secondary containment of industrial tanks where exposure is prolonged.

Is it the same as a PVC sheet or a waterproofing tarp?

No. Waterproof tarps and PVC liners are softer materials with plasticizers that migrate over time and shorten their service life under sun exposure; they are suitable for temporary uses or short-term covers. This HDPE geomembrane is a monolithic high-density polyethylene sheet without plasticizers, designed for decades of service under permanent UV radiation. The difference becomes obvious from the first year of real exposure.
